Frequently Asked Questions
These are questions we are commonly asked at shows regarding our model trees.
We are preparing a page on creating scenery using our rock castings.
How do you make these trees?
We start with a square length of basswood that is machined round then shaped to a taper. It is then scribed and stained. Holes are hand drilled into the dowel and each 'branch' is inserted individually.
What size are the trees in scale feet?

Which trees should I use on my layout?
Evergreens come in a variety of shapes -- from thin to wide, thick and bushy to sparse. Some are cone shaped. Others have an oval shape. We've designed several basic conifer styles, each with certain features that are characteristic of many evergreens found throughout the United States and Canada. Although we've given each design a name, in reality there are over 100 species of conifers in North America, many only a botanist could tell apart. If you're modeling a specific area, look at the trees. Are certain characteristics predominant? Which ones are tallest? Does one of our models have a similar look?
For those of you who would like us to be more specific these are some guidelines you may want to consider:
| EASTERN TREES: |
White Pine Spruce/light green Spruce/dark green Fir Aspen Maple |
WESTERN TREES: | Ponderosa Pine
Lodgepole Pine Spruce/light green Spruce/dark green Fir Blue Spruce * Aspen |
* The Blue Spruce are found throughout the Rocky Mountain Range. They are also a very popular decorative tree found in yards everywhere.
